Session 4 Shows (subject to change)
|
|
How To Eat Like A Child -- Ages 7-9 This musical romp through the joys and sorrows of being a child is hilarious. Children give 23 lessons in such subjects as how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, how to act after being sent to your room and how to laugh hysterically.
The Little Mermaid -- Ages 9-11 In a magical kingdom fathoms below, we meet Ariel, the little mermaid who is tired of flipping her fins and longs to be part of the fascinating world on dry land. Joining her are Sebastian, Ariel’s crabby sidekick, Ursula, the evil sea witch, Triton, King of the Sea and the handsome and human Prince Eric.
The Happy Elf -- Ages 9-11 The Happy Elf follows Eubie, the happiest elf at the North Pole. More than anything else, Eubie longs to be a part of Santa's sleigh team. Instead, he's stuck checking the naughty-or-nice lists. Then, one Christmas Eve, he sees something strange: in the whole town of Bluesville, not a single person has been nice. With a pinch of elfish magic and a magical whoosh, Eubie's off to Bluesville. But can he turn a whole town of naughty children nice in just one day?
Goosebumps The Musical -- Ages 11- 12 Brooke and Zeke are thrilled to be starring in a mysterious show called The Phantom, and not the least bit frightened by the old legend that the play is cursed. But when strange, spooky messages start appearing, and a masked menace starts disrupting rehearsals, they begin to wonder: what if there really is a ghost haunting their school, determined to stop the show?!
The Drowsy Chaperone -- Ages 11-14 With the houselights down, a man in a chair appears on stage and puts on his favorite record: the cast recording of a fictitious 1928 musical. The recording comes to life and The Drowsy Chaperone begins as the man in the chair looks on. My Favorite Year -- Ages 11-14 It’s 1954, and Benjy Stone, freshman writer on TV’s King Kaiser Comedy Cavalcade, is assigned the daunting task of baby-sitting veteran Hollywood swashbuckler Alan Swann while he’s doing a live guest appearance on the show. The effort to keep the reckless Swann out of the papers during the rehearsal week nearly drives Benjy to the brink, when he’s given an unexpected glimpse into Swann’s broken heart that teaches him about human frailty, tragedy, comedy, love – and about what made 1954 his favorite year.
Imaginary -- Ages 11-14 Milo is Sam’s only friend and they spend all their time together, using only their imaginations to transform their world into a place of adventure and excitement. But as Sam’s first day at a new school approaches, his mother worries that Milo is holding her son back, stopping him from growing up. School turns out to be full of surprises– and secrets. With a cast of adults and kids, IMAGINARY centers on an enduring friendship with other-worldly twists and turns that change lives forever.
Seussical -- Ages 11-17 Seussical creates the witty, wild and whimsical world of Dr. Seuss as it has never been seen before. When chaos erupts in the Jungle of Nool, it will take the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude Mc Fuzz, and a gaggle of characters to bring harmony back to their world. Seussical is a contemporary re-imagining of Dr. Seuss, which weaves together many of his most famous stories and characters in unexpected ways. The Tony Award-winning team of Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (Ragtime & Once on This Island) has created a score that includes pop, gospel, blues and R & B
West Side Story -- Ages 11-17 Transplanting the classic tale of “Romeo and Juliet” to New York City in the 1950s, two feuding families are replaced by brawling street gangs. The Montagues become the Anglo Jets, led by Riff, and the Capulets become the Puerto Rican Sharks, led by Bernardo. At a dance, Tony, former leader of the Jets and Riff’s best friend, and Maria, Bernardo’s little sister, see each other across the room and it’s love at first sight. With opposition from both sides, they meet secretly and their love grows deeper. However, the gangs are plotting one last rumble, a fight that will finally end the battle for control of the streets. Will Tony and Maria’s love carry through a battle that threatens to destroy the people they love around them?
Nine -- Ages 11-17 A theatrical adaptation of the Federico Fellini film 8 1/2 with music and lyrics by American composer Maury Yeston concerns the difficulties of the film director Guido Contini. Fresh off the greatest hit of his career so far, he endures a midlife crisis that has blocked his creative impulses and entangled him in a web of romantic difficulties. We view the world through his eyes and see all that goes on in his head; demons and fantasies alike.
She Kills Monsters -- Ages 11-17 The story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90's pop culture, acclaimed young playwright, Qui Nguyen, offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.
Shakespeare In Love -- Ages 11-17 Based on the Academy Award-winning movie, this enchanting, hilarious, romantic stage play re-imagines William Shakespeare's creative process – and explores his inspiration – as he writes Romeo and Juliet.
Sunday In The Park WIth George -- Ages 11-17 (Stock Show) Georges Seurat is struggling to make meaningful art and maintaining a relationship with his lover, Dot. Amid the scorn of the artistic community, Seurat's artistic ability thrives while his love diminishes. A century later, Seurat's descendant – named George and also an artist – finds himself burnt out and in search of what artistic path to follow, but he finds the answer to his future in the past.

Camp Big Brothers and Big Sisters Become Friends and Mentors to our youngest campers
|
|
Camp, is an incredibly powerful social experience for children for many reasons, and one of the best parts of it is that it brings children of different ages together and gives them the opportunity to form meaningful friendships. Every summer our older, more 'seasoned' campers have the opportunity to be Big Sisters or Big Brothers to our first time campers who are age 11 and younger. We begin the "pairings" in May and if at all possible we want to match Big Brothers and Sisters with younger campers they might be able to see during the non-Camp season. There will be time to get into connect with one another before camp even begins.
Why do this? The older campers will spend time telling their "young sibs" about something that they have loved about growing up at French Woods and how they will be available to their Little Brother or Little Sister should they get homesick, have questions about Camp, or just want to talk with someone who isn’t their bunk counselor. Throughout each session we will be carving out time for these Camp Siblings to spend time with each other.
We will email parents of the younger ones and email the older campers (with a copy to their parents) with the specifics of the 'match.' Each Little Brother/Little Sister will receive a phone call/ email or text from their Big Brother or Big Sister before camp begins to introduce themselves and to talk about camp and all the excitement that’s soon to come.
CIT's -- We would like all our first and second CIT's to be a part of the Big Brother, Little Brother/ Big Sister, Little Sister Program at camp. Contact rose@frenchwoods for more info.

5 Reasons Why Great Parents Send Their Kids to Camp
At camp this summer, your child will . . . Develop Independence You are giving your child the opportunity to live and thrive without being with you and under your constant 'watch.' The growth in confidence and independence happen at camp without a cell phone, the internet (or a parent next to them) to immediately turn to when they are faced with a decision. Campers learn to use other resources – including their own great minds! They have opportunities to challenge themselves and try new things. The confidence that results from their accomplishments and independence can be life changing.
Experience Childhood Fun and Adventure French Woods gives your kids the opportunity to further develop their chosen performing/ visual and fine arts skills and to explore new avenues of interest alongside campers who have interests similar to their own. You are giving your child the gift of magical childhood memories that will last forever.
Relax You are giving your child a break from the pressures and stress of school, their after-school activities and the last 2 years of a pandemic. Kids have been tethered to their parents and parents tethered to their childen by necesiity throughout COVID. Kids need a break from their parent's well-intentioned involvement in their lives.
Get Unplugged Amazing stuff happens when you put your phone down and have a nice conversation with someone. You are giving your child the chance to unplug and connect face-to-face with other kids and positive, young-adult role models. We will get back to confidence, self-advocation, creativity and social interaction with no internet connection or mute button needed. At French Woods we support one another without judgment.
Become Better at Making and Keeping Friends The bonding and friendships that happen at camp are different from those that occur at school and on sports teams. The intensity of living together and experiencing life together, without distractions, creates the ideal setting to form lifelong friendships and really get to know people well.
So, if people ever question your decision to send your young child to a traditional, longer camp stay this summer, let them know that it’s hard for you to let your child go, but that you’re giving your child a gift that will have more impact than any material item you’ve ever given.
Rose and I, along with our furry family members, Bella and Shelby, will be driving up to camp in less than 2 weeks. We miss you all terribly and look forward to our reunion with all of you. Just remember it's 42 days till Session 1 and 61 days till Session 2.
Won't be long now,
Isaac

4K Race For the Arts Why did my mom sign me up for the Race for the Arts? We invite you to sponsor your child this summer for our 12th annual 4K Race for the Arts. While there is no charge to run the race or participate as a volunteer, a minimum contribution of $35 entitles your camper to a commemorative t-shirt. Funds raised from parents and business sponsors through our not-for-profit, the Hancock-French Woods Arts Alliance, are awarded as college scholarships to deserving, needy students committed to a career in the arts who are also your camper’s French Woods counselors.
Counselors interested in applying for an HFWAA scholarship fill out a rigorous application and we strive to give those chosen a hand-up rather than just a handout. Food for thought: Part of the true magic of camp lies in the relationship between children and their counselors. Children who have been cared for all of their lives by “old” parents in their thirties and forties, or by “ancient” teachers moving through their forties and fifties, are delighted by the novelty of sharing adventures as well as their apprehensions and being cared for by appealing young adults in their late teens and early twenties. Those young adults are an integral part of making the French Woods summer experience a great one.
There is one race per session. Lareger sponsorship opportunities are available. The Race for the Arts form recently was added to your CampIn Touch dashboard. Please contact Rose with any questions! race@frenchwoods.com

It’s mid-April and I am more than ready to get to camp. I am so looking forward to seeing all of you and working with you on the four shows I’ll be directing. I am waiting to see my friends in Hancock. Louie has sent me pictures of the new bunks and I can’t wait to see them in person. Right now, Barbara and I are planning to arrive in camp in mid-May. My gator is ready for use. Climb on.
