Dear French Woods Families
|
|
February is a super busy month in the French Woods office. We are putting the final touches on our tentative show schedule and will begin the licensing process for the shows next month. The calendar is coming together and I’m starting to get very excited about the shows I will work on this summer.
On the staffing side of things, we are full steam ahead! I attended an in-person hiring fair in London last month and will head back in March for a second one while Michael attends the job fair at the Southeastern Theater Conference. We still are looking for staff in a variety of positions from tech theater and waterfront staff to fine art, office and medical staff. Do you know someone who is interested in a camp job this summer? Applications can be submitted on our website.
We can’t wait to see you all this summer! Beth

Snow White Ages 7-9 The beautiful and kindhearted princess, Snow White, charms every creature in the kingdom except one - her jealous stepmother, the Queen. When the Magic Mirror proclaims Snow White the fairest one of all, she must flee into the forest, where she befriends the lovable seven dwarfs - Doc, Sneezy, Grumpy, Happy, Bashful, Sleepy, and Dopey.
101 Dalmatians Ages 7-9 In a loving home in the city of London, Dalmatian parents, Pongo and Perdita happily raise their Dalmatian puppies, until the monstrous Cruella De Vil plots to steal them for her new fur coat! Join all the dogs of London, as they daringly rescue the puppies from Cruella and her bumbling henchmen. With a delightfully fun score, lovable characters, and one of the most deliciously evil villains in the Disney canon, this stage adaptation is certain to charm and delight.
Freckleface Strawberry Ages 9-11 Freckleface Strawberry was just like every other girl – except she had bright red hair and something worse...FReCKLeS! Based on the beloved book, you can step inside the book’s pages with Freckleface and friends as they learn to love the skin they’re in.
Frozen Ages 9-11 The story centers on the relationship between two sisters who are princesses, Elsa and Anna. Elsa has magical powers to freeze objects and people, that she does not know how to control. After inheriting the throne, Elsa flees, inadvertently causes the kingdom to become frozen in an eternal winter, and nearly kills her sister. She must sacrifice and show true love to save the day.
How to Eat Like a Child Ages 9-11 This musical romp through the joys and sorrows of being a child is hilarious. Children give 23 lessons in such subjects as how to beg for a dog, how to torture your sister, how to act after being sent to your room and how to laugh hysterically.
Wizard of Oz Ages 11-12 Dorothy lives on a farm in Kansas until a cyclone arrives, and picks up her house, her dog and Dorothy herself, depositing them all in the land of Oz. Things in Oz are strange and beautiful, but Dorothy just wants to get back home. She’s helped by the Good Witch of the North, but she’s also in trouble with the Wicked Witch of the West, who seeks revenge for the death of the Wicked Witch of the East, for which she blames Dorothy.
Children of Eden Ages 11-14 The musical is based on the Book of Genesis, with Act I telling the story of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, while Act II deals with Noah and the Flood.
Beauty and the Beast Ages 11-14 Beauty and the Beast tells the story of an unkind prince who has been magically transformed into an unsightly creature as punishment for his selfish ways. To revert into his true human form, the Beast must learn to love a bright, beautiful young lady who he has imprisoned in his enchanted castle before it is too late in the first place.
Funny Girl Ages 11-14 A semi-biographical story based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedian Fanny Brice featuring her stormy relationship with entrepreneur and gambler Nick Arnstein. The musical is set in and around New York City just prior to and following World War I. Ziegfeld Follies star Fanny Brice, awaiting the return of her husband, Nicky Arnstein, from prison, reflects on their life together, and their story is told as a flashback.
Wonderful Town Ages 11-14 Tells the story of two sisters, Ruth and Eileen, who move from a rural town in Ohio to experience the bright lights, the big city, and the crazy characters of Greenwich Village, New York City. Ruth is an aspiring writer and Eileen is a dancer who wants to pursue a life on stage. One sister can’t find a man no matter what she does, the other can’t keep them away. Together, these two sisters take on the world, pursuing their dreams and finding love along the way.
The Prom Ages 11-17 Four eccentric Broadway stars are in desperate need of a new stage. So when they hear that trouble is brewing around a small-town prom, they know that it’s time to put a spotlight on the issue…and themselves. The town’s parents want to keep the high school dance on the straight and narrow—but when one student just wants to bring her girlfriend to prom, the entire town has a date with destiny. On a mission to transform lives, Broadway’s brassiest join forces with a courageous girl and the town’s citizens and the result is love that brings them all together.
Sweeney Todd Ages 11-17 The rare instance of a musical thriller, Sweeney Todd is Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s chilling, suspenseful, heart-pounding masterpiece of murderous barberism and culinary crime. Sophisticated, macabre, visceral and uncompromising, Sweeney Todd, nevertheless has a great sense of fun, mixing intense drama with howlingly funny moments of dark humor.
Sweet Charity Ages 11-17 Taxi dancer Charity continues to have faith in the human race despite apparently endless disappointments at its hands, and hope that she will finally meet the nice young man to romance her away from her sleazy life. Maybe, just maybe, handsome Oscar will be the one to do it.
Bat Boy Ages 11-17 A musical comedy/horror show about a half boy/half bat creature who is discovered in a cave near Hope Falls, West Virginia. The local sheriff brings Bat Boy to the home of the town veterinarian, Dr. Parker, where he is eventually accepted as a member of the family and taught to act like a “normal” boy by the veterinarian’s wife, Meredith, and teenage daughter, Shelley. Bat Boy is happy with his new life, but when he naively tries to fit in with the narrow-minded people of Hope Falls, they turn on him, prodded by the machinations of Dr. Parker, who secretly despises Bat Boy. Shelley and Bat Boy, who have fallen in love, run away but their happiness is shattered when Meredith arrives and reveals a secret. Soon the entire town arrives and hears the shocking story of Bat Boy’s unholy origin.
DRAMAS Cosi A play about madness, illusion, sanity…and theatre. In a mental institution in 1971, Lewis, a young director, takes on the task of mounting a production of Mozart’s Cosi Fan Tutte in the burnt-out theatre while protests against the Vietnam War are being staged outside. The young director takes on the task of producing a play with the patients who live there. As his life is touched by these extraordinary people and his operatic production (Cosi Fan Tutte) lurches forward, we learn, along with Lewis, that when chasing your dreams it helps to be a little crazy.
Brighton Beach Memoirs This semi-autobiographical coming-of-age comedy by Neil Simon is set in Brooklyn, New York’s Brighton Beach in 1937. It is the first play in what is known as Simon’s “Eugene Trilogy.” His protagonist is Eugene Morris Jerome, a Russian-Jewish teenager who experiences a search for identity as he tries to deal with his family, including his older brother Stanley, whom he idolizes.

Amid the scorn of the artistic community, Seurat's artistic ability thrives while his love diminishes. A century later, Seurat's descendant – named George and also an artist – finds himself burnt out and in search of what artistic path to follow, but he finds the answer to his future in the past.

A common concern families new to French Woods as well as some returners is, "What do you do at camp for homesickness?"
HOMESICKNESS...Many first year campers have never been away from home for an extended period of time and this is more prevalent in the last two years given the pandemic.
Homesickness is a natural result of the changes in a child’s environment. Parents can take courage from the fact that many campers do not experience this, and those that do recover swiftly. All of the camp staff, from the director down, are prepared to help the youngster with the adjustment, expedited with the cooperation of the parent.
There are things you can do before camp, where we ask you to be our partners in helping your child prepare for camp.
At Home...If your camper exhibits concern about going to camp, encourage them to talk to you about it. It is helpful to tell your child that such concerns are normal and that many other campers feel the same way. If there are specific worries about bunkmates, clothes, or anything else, let your child call the camp office and speak with me. Often specific answers are not necessary after the child has had the opportunity to express themselves to a receptive ear.
Don’t be ambivalent about the length of your child’s stay at camp. There should be no trial periods. They are there for a full session and should understand this. A “try-out” approach is a sure loser, certain to create a serious homesickness problem at camp.
Send a note or care package (Remember-No Food) ahead of time to arrive the first day of camp. Acknowledge, in a positive way, that you will miss your child. For example, you can say “I am going to miss you, but I know that you will have a good time at camp.” Reassure your child that everything at home will be the same as when they left; that pets will be cared for, possessions protected, etc. If, for some reason, this is not possible, let me know so that we can be effectively supportive. Don’t bribe. Linking a successful stay at camp to a material object sends the wrong message. The reward should be your child’s new found confidence and independence.
Please notify me of any upsetting event that may have occurred prior to camp, or is to occur during the summer. This might include illness or death in the family, poor school grades, divorce or moving to a new house or city.
When seeing your child off at the bus, the airport or dropping them off at camp, be sure to make your parting brief and pleasant. Long goodbyes and floods of tears are upsetting. The same applies for visiting days.
Remember, our staff will always be there to help make you and your child feel comfortable. Every camp asks for parents to fill out medical and profile information. Be sure that you complete the online health history, confidential camper form and activity profile forms as completely and as soon as possible. Don’t forget to include a photo! While the camp is designed to provide instruction and recreation in many areas, certain campers may have a more rewarding time if encouraged in specific activities. The camp staff’s knowledge of your child’s interests (and phobias!) can be helpful in arranging the most appropriate program from the wide variety of activities that French Woods offers.
At Camp...Your cooperation is needed to ensure a successful summer for your child. Most children are resilient and adapt successfully to new situations. Parents, however, sometimes find it difficult to adjust to their children being away from home. To prevent any negative effects on your campers, write or email frequently with good news and a cheerful tone - chatty and pleasant. Try not to telephone except in an emergency. Contact me if you have a special concern. Be assured we will contact you if your child is experiencing difficulties. Remember children can call you after the first week of each session.
If a “rescue call” comes from the child, offer calm reassurance and put the time frame into perspective. Above all, avoid the temptation to take the child home early. Should you receive an upsetting call or email, telephone me immediately. My staff and I will help. MAKE NO PROMISES. To do so is a sure route to failure.
Talk candidly with me or your child’s head counselor to obtain our perspective on your child’s adjustment. Don’t feel guilty about encouraging your child to stay at camp. For many children, camp is a first step toward independence and plays an important role in their growth and development.
Conclusion...Camp is an experience that cannot be replicated in any other environment. It offers the opportunity for your child to achieve the poise and confidence that comes with the mastery of skills and the sociability developed as a vital participant in a structured and democratic community of their peers. French Woods works diligently to assemble the best staff possible. Countless hours throughout the year go into preparation and evaluation of the camp program. With your help, we are well prepared to serve the needs of your child. Keep counting the days! 109 days till Session 1 and 128 days to Session 2!

Important Info from Errick
|
|
Parents,
Please add our camp phone numbers to your contact list in your cell phones. Please make sure our emails do not end up in spam and add them to your contact list too.
So many times the office calls you, the head counselor calls you, or even your campers call from camp and the call goes straight to voicemail because you do not recognize the number. We all do it!
While it is fresh in your mind, please add (607) 637-8400 to your contacts/address book and mark it French Woods. All of our phone lines will come through on your phone as this same number.
By March, we will have CampMeds info on your child's dashboard. Just scroll all the way down to Family forms. If your camper takes any prescription medication or over the counter meds regularly, the meds must be packaged by single dose. CampMeds has been providing this service for many years. You can also use CVS Single Dose Program or your pharmacy.

Hey Frenchwoodite,
You can’t believe how beautiful the camp looks right now, covered with 20 plus inches of snow. One of our neighbors called a few days ago to ask if he could drive his car out on the lake and go ice fishing! Louie sends me pictures all the time. I miss going up in the winter and enjoying the snow.
Barbara and I have been able to eat out, but only in outdoor restaurants. It’s still important to stay safe. If you haven't done it yet, as soon as you can, try and get your vaccinations. You will love the feeling of freedom they provide. I can’t wait for camp for a sense of normalcy to return. Camp is almost here.
