Dear French Woods Families
|
|
Michael, Tristan and I hope that you had the happiest of New Years! The highlight of my holidays is connecting to my French Woods family and this year was no different. Friends from my bunk organized a reunion zoom call! I say it all the time - camp friends are the best friends - even more years later than I care to admit…
Hiring continues! Please remember that we are looking for counselors and specialists in a variety of areas including Film, Circus, Ropes, Fine Art, Rock Shop, Waterfront and Stagecraft. Do you know someone with a free summer? We’d love to speak with them.
Darryn, Anne and I will be attending a number of virtual job fairs in the next two months. If you or a friend is interested in a position, be sure to submit applications online ASAP to have the greatest chance of job availability in the area of preference.
We are still looking for nurses, particularly in sessions 3 and 4. Please let us know if someone that you know would be interested.
See you in June!

Magic Tree House: A Ghost Tale For Mr Dickens, JR. Ages 7-9 Jack and Annie’s tree house takes them to Victorian London in this holiday-themed story, where they learn the importance of charity and kindness through their friendship with legendary author, Charles Dickens.
Peter Pan Ages 9-11 The everlasting classic account of two boys and a girl who follow Peter Pan and the invisible fairy, Tinker Bell, into Never Land, where children never grow old and where Captain Hook and his pirates are outwitted.
Alice In Wonderland Ages 9-11 Join Alice as she stumbles into the world of Wonderland and chases the White Rabbit, races the Dodo Bird, gets tied up with the Tweedles, raps with a bubble-blowing Caterpillar and beats the Queen of Hearts at her own game! Roles are plentiful, including three Cheshire Cats and dozens of other wonderfully wacky characters.
Bells Are Ringing Ages 11-12 Ella Peterson is a Brooklyn telephone answering service operator who tries to improve the lives of her clients by passing along bits of information she hears from other clients. She falls in love with one of her clients, the playwright Jeffrey Moss, and is determined to meet him. The trouble is, on the phone with him, she always pretends to be an old woman whom he calls “Mom.”
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Ages 11-14 Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice have created a soft-rock fantasy from the biblical story of Joseph and his brethren and turned this ancient tale into a rollicking pastiche of vaudevillian turns, country and western, calypso and 50’s rock and roll.
H.M.S. Pinafore Ages 11-14 A Gilbert and Sullivan operetta with a plot imbued with mirth and silliness. Pinafore pokes good-natured fun at the British class system, patriotism, party politics, the Royal Navy, and the rise of unqualified people to positions of authority.
Little Shop of Horrors* Ages 11-14 Seymour, an orphan and a nerd, is taken in and given a job by Mr. Mushnik, the owner of a run down florist shop in the 'seedy' part of town. Seymour spends his time doing menial tasks and dreaming of the shop assistant, Audrey. One day, just after an eclipse of the Sun, Seymour discovers a strange plant. He buys it and names is Audrey II. While caring for Audrey II, Seymour discovers the plant’s rather unique appetite. The plant grows and grows, as does Seymour’s infatuation for Audrey, but who will get her first?
In The Heights Ages 11-17 tells the story of a vibrant community in Manhattan’s Washington Heights – a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music. It’s a community on the brink of change, full of hopes, dreams and pressures, where the biggest struggles can be deciding which traditions you take with you, and which ones you leave behind.
Anastasia Ages 11-17 Inspired by the beloved films, Anastasia transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love and family.
The Other Josh Cohen* Ages 11-17 Enter the quirky world of Josh Cohen’s New York City apartment… as it is getting robbed. Thus begins the hilarious rock-and-roll romantic comedy about good guy Josh, caught in a lifelong battle with bad luck. Broke and alone, all hope seems lost – until a mysterious letter arrives that changes his life forever. Two actors play the hapless-yet-warmhearted title character – one eventful year apart – in a life-changing laughfest that will leave you feeling better about the world.
Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of) Ages 11-17 This unique take on Jane Austen's beloved novel is an adaptation like no other, drawing on over two hundred years of romantic pop history and featuring six young women with a story to tell.

Dear French Woods Campers and Parents,
I wish all of you a Happy New Year filled with love, peace, health, wealth, happiness and all things good AND a great summer at French Woods in 2021.
It has been a long year and we are so excited about re-opening our doors this summer so that we can get back to caring for our campers and their families and sharing the French Woods experience.
We are so energized to be making plans for this summer! Our preliminary protocols are in place that we will have sent or will send out to you shortly. Since this is such a fluid situation, we will keep you updated as time passes and send you our final protocols before we go up to camp in May.
We thank all of our families for their understanding, patience, and support. Our goal is to create the safest and most fulfilling environment for you, your children and our staff.
We missed you at camp this summer. I have spent over 40 years at French Woods and it was the first time without the happy noise of children and staff growing, learning, creating and enjoying the benefits that French Woods affords us all.
I am planning to host first time camper and their parents’ forums in the spring where you will meet some of our key staff, explain the workings of our camp, introduce you to other campers and their parents and answer all of your questions.
We are working on a very special Counselor in Training (CIT) program for this summer and additionally will be hosting an online CIT retreat for our teens. We also would like to hold a few virtual get-togethers with all of our campers before camp begins this summer. Read below "News frrom Rose" for a more specific CIT program update.
I am here to make sure that your child has an incredible summer that is filled with personal growth, unique and exciting activities, everlasting learning experiences, life-long friendships, and loads and loads of fun in the safest environment possible for children.
Please feel free to contact me anytime with any questions or concerns.

Have you heard about our new Impact Artist™ CIT program? FWF has partnered with Entertainment for Change (EFC), a nonprofit organization, to lead and transform our next generation of artistic activists. For this summer’s CIT program + a new “Impact Artist™ Major,” EFC’s Founder Jade will be educating young people about utilizing their unique creative expression to share the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations (Gender Equality, Climate Action, No Poverty, etc); empowering what we call “Impact Artists” by having guest FWF alum and parents share their stories and experiences as artistic activists. Together we will create our “visions for the future” projects to share in an ONLINE LIVE STREAM EVENT at the end of this summer!
What can I do if I’m not a camper? Follow and DM Jade @entertainmentforchange. They would love to partner with you.
Impact Artist™ Activation! It has been a heavy start to 2021. As the next generation, you will be leading sustainable change and we want to hear your passion tangents. Entertainment for Change is inviting you to VOICE your Impact. Spoken word is a form of art and as Impact Artists, we want to see how you blend art and activism. Make an Instagram Reel or a Tik Tok expressing what you wish to see for the rest of 2021 and use the UN SDGs as guidance.

140 days until camp and I can’t wait. I have never gone this long without camp since I was five years old. I can’t tell you how much I miss you guys.
Last week, I received my first vaccination for Covid and will get the second in another two weeks. Just to let you know, it was so easy. No reaction at all and I didn’t even feel the injection. It won’t be long now before we can get back to normal.
On another note: Many of you noted that we were able to go to biodegradable plates and cups in 2019 for use in our Dining Hall. New for this summer, we also will be using biodegradable flatware. In addition, one of our service lines, in each Dining Room, will be devoted to vegetarian and gluten free service. This will in no way affect our regular menu since three of the service lines will continue as before.
Things change.
See you at camp soon.
Ron
