Dear French Woods Families
|
|
|
Michael, Tristan and I hope you had the happiest of New Years! The highlight of my holidays is connecting to my French Woods family and this year was no different. After spending my annual New Year's Eve with camp friends I can say again - camp friends are the best friends.
Hiring continues! Please remember that we are looking for counselors and specialists in a variety of areas including Tennis, Film, Circus, Ropes, Fine Art, Rock Shop, Waterfront, Wood Shop and Stagecraft. Do you know someone with a free summer? We’d love to speak with them.
Darryn is off to the Europe and beyond with hiring and then Carson and I will be at South East Theater Conference and North Carolina School of the Arts at the end of next month. If you or a friend is interested in a position, be sure to submit applications online ASAP to have the greatest chance of job availability in the area of preference.
We are still looking for nurses, physician’s assistants and nurse practitioners in all sessions. Please let us know if someone that you know would be interested.
See you in June!
-Beth

Session 1, 2023 Shows (subject to change)
|
|
The Jungle Book -Ages 7-9 Join Mowgli, Baloo, King Louie and the gang as they swing their way through madcap adventures and thwart the ferocious tiger, Shere Khan. Specially adapted from the beloved film, this musical includes all your favorite Disney tunes, with colorful characters and that toe-tapping rhythm.
Cinderella – Ages 9-11 Cinderella is treated as a slave by her selfish step family. She dreams of going to the Prince’s ball. She gets her wish courtesy of her Fairy Godmother, who does the pumpkin-into-coach bit, then delivers the requisite “be home by midnight” warning. Thoroughly enchanting the prince at the ball, our heroine hightails it at midnight, leaving a glass slipper behind.
Honk – Ages 9-11 This is the story of Ugly, whose odd, gawky looks instantly incite prejudice from his family and neighbors. Separated from the farm and pursued by a hungry Cat, Ugly must find his way home. Along his rollicking and harrowing journey he not only discovers his true beauty and glorious destiny, but also finds love and acceptance in all its forms.
Tarzan – Ages 11-12 Washed up on the shores of West Africa, an infant boy is taken in and raised by gorillas who name him Tarzan. Apart from striving for acceptance from his ape father, Tarzan's life is mostly monkey business until a human expedition treks into his tribe's territory, and he encounters creatures like himself for the first time. Tarzan struggles to navigate a jungle, thick with emotion, as he discovers his animal upbringing clashing with his human instincts.
Hello Dolly! – Ages 11-14 A matchmaker named Dolly Levi takes a trip to Yonkers, New York to see the “well-known unmarried half-a-millionaire,” Horace Vandergelder. While there, she convinces him, his two stock clerks, his niece and her beau to go to New York City. In New York, she fixes Vandergelder’s clerks up with the woman Vandergelder had been courting, and her shop assistant, so that Dolly can follow her designs on Mr. Vandergelder for herself.
Disaster! - Ages 11-14 Disaster! is a new musical straight from Broadway, featuring some of the most unforgettable songs of the '70s. "Knock on Wood," "Hooked on a Feeling," "Sky High," "I Am Woman" and "Hot Stuff" are just a few of the scintillating hits in this hilarious musical comedy with a book by three-time Emmy Award nominee and SiriusXM Broadway host, Seth Rudetsky, and Jack Plotnick.
The Pajama Game – Ages 11-14 The dangers of a workplace romance are explored to hysterical effect in this romantic comedy from the creators of “Damn Yankees.” Conditions at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory are anything but peaceful, as sparks fly between new superintendent Sid Sorokin and Babe Williams, leader of the union grievance committee. Their stormy relationship comes to a head when the workers strike for a 7½-cent pay increase, setting off not only a conflict between management and labor, but a battle of the sexes as well. Bright and brassy, this unconventional, fast-paced Broadway favorite is every bit the embodiment of legendary director George Abbott at his very best. The energetic score by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross is brimming with songs and dances, which have become popular and musical theatre standards. Ages eleven to fourteen are sure to enjoy this classic.
Anastasia – Ages 11-17 Inspired by the beloved films, Anastasia transports us from the twilight of the Russian Empire to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s, as a brave young woman sets out to discover the mystery of her past. Pursued by a ruthless Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya enlists the aid of a dashing conman and a lovable ex-aristocrat. Together, they embark on an epic adventure to help her find home, love, and family.
Honeymoon in Vegas - Ages 11-17 Mild-mannered Brooklynite, Jack, promised his dying mother that he would never get married, but that was before he met his sweet and beautiful girlfriend, Betsy. Haunted by a fear of Mom's retribution, Jack avoids proposing but, when he finally summons the nerve to whisk oh-so-patient Betsy off to Las Vegas to get hitched, a dashing gambler named Tommy threatens to sweep his fiancée away to a life of luxury in Hawaii. Realizing what he's about to lose, Jack is determined to do anything to give his love story a happy ending. It all adds up to an action-packed honeymoon that no one will ever forget!
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum– Ages 11-17 Broadway’s greatest farce is light, fast-paced, witty, irreverent and one of the funniest musicals ever written – the perfect escape from life’s troubles. The show takes comedy back to its roots, combining situations from time-tested 2,000 year old comedies of Roman playwright Plautus with the infectious energy of classic vaudeville. The result is a non-stop laugh-fest in which a crafty slave (Pseudolus) struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan (Philia) for his young master (Hero), in exchange for freedom.
She Kills Monsters – Ages 11-17 The story of Agnes Evans as she leaves her childhood home in Ohio following the death of her teenage sister, Tilly. When Agnes finds Tilly’s Dungeons & Dragons notebook, however, she stumbles into a journey of discovery and action-packed adventure in the imaginary world that was Tilly’s refuge. In this high-octane dramatic comedy laden with homicidal fairies, nasty ogres, and 90's pop culture, acclaimed young playwright Qui Nguyen offers a heart-pounding homage to the geek and warrior within us all.

Dear CITs and Parents,
Love Kids? Love Camp? Ready for Responsibility?
Are you 15 to 18 years of age by August 1, 2023?
If you answered yes to these questions, a CIT (counselor-in-training) program at French Woods could be right for you.
We want our CIT’s to play an important role at French Woods that adds to the positive and safe environment at camp.
We do a biennial CIT Retreat. Our last one was Memorial Day Weekend 2022 and our next one is Memorial Day Weekend 2024.
So what about 2023 you ask?
We will start before camp opens with our big brother/sister - little brother/sister program. This is your first opportunity to be a mentor to younger, first time campers to French Woods. What is the best way to get in contact with you? Email. Text, Messenger? LET ME KNOW.
On 6-minor day we will work around your auditions and placements but will expect you to show up for a CIT session. We are not merely going to hand out CIT sheets, but talk to you about options. Do you want to help in a program area "hands-on" or "behind the scenes?" Or are you more interested in assisting in camp operations - making changeover day fun!, helping with logistics in arrivals, departures, visiting day or duties in the Program Office? Or would you rather plan and organize events and evening activities?
2022 feedback from teaching staff includes appropriate behavior, showing up, goals and seeing goals them through.
We are planning some meetings/trainings just for you. Looking forward to comraderie, fun, and putting what you learn to use at camp!
Supers will be invited to staff orientation at camp. Session 1 orientation begins on June 1st and for the later sessions orientation begins on June 20th.

Hi Frenchwoodites!
So many of you were in contact over the holidays. I can’t tell you how good it is to hear from everyone.
Keep those emails and texts coming. I love to hear from you.
We have so many changes coming this summer: an expanded wellness center, a new girl's bunk, new docks for the waterfront and all the newly renovated cabins. Construction has been going on all winter. Right now there are renovations going on in the Cat Theater. Lots of change.
