Dear French Woods Families

Dear French Woods Families,
Many of our campers will audition for college programs in the performing arts. Because so many of our staff sit on audition panels and teach in popular college programs including UCLA, Boston Conservatory, Boston University, Emerson, Nebraska Wesleyan University, University of Miami and New World School of the Arts, we are uniquely positioned to help them prepare.
For the past two years, parents have been asked to register interested 15 to 17 year old campers via CampIn Touch for the college prep course that took place in each three-week session last summer. This summer will be no different. Space will be limited and those registered for theater college prep will be asked to choose repertoire prior to the beginning of camp to work on while in class. We know that college applications are looming in student’s minds earlier than ever. Brian Kite, Theater Department Chair and Professor at UCLA (and long time French Woods staff member), tells us that in his experience French Woods alumni who audition at UCLA often stand out because they understand what to do in an audition room.
We are working on new ways to prepare teens to leave a session at camp with college audition material ready without missing the opportunity to perform in shows and have a French Woods Camp experience at the same time.
I'll see you all soon.
Beth

As school began across the nation this fall, many schools limited their arts and extracurricular activities. The coronavirus pandemic created unprecedented changes in daily life and everyone became affected. We’ve all had to ‘pivot’ and come up with ways to keep life as normal as possible, to continue to nourish our families in ways that permit our kids to continue to laugh, learn and grow through their joy in the arts.
What would anyone of us have done in the last several months if not for the entertainment and artistic world who made it possible for us to virtually go to museums, watch Broadway shows, enjoy concerts and participate in discussions with artists from around the world? Those opportunities have been invaluable. I, too, have binge-watched many a TV series, participated in a FWF Facebook watch of Hamilton and even went to a Zoom life event of one of our long-term campers. The problem is, we have become spectators. Our French Woods community has missed the hands-on involvement of being creative, learning the craft and ‘making art’ with others in person, whether it be performing or fine arts.
We know children involved in the performing arts develop skills that include critical thinking, problem solving, teamwork and effective communication. It has been reported that they are less likely to drop out of school, have higher test scores on college entrance exams and have lower instances of using tobacco, alcohol, and drugs.
Parents know that the best creative outlet for their child is a place like French Woods. For the last 50 years, for many campers, French Woods has been the only place they could go to pursue their passions and have the time to actually learn the craft required to be creative and “make art” while making lifelong friendships with peers from across the US and around the world.
For 2021, we are “full steam ahead.” Our returning families, staff and all of us ‘year-rounders’ are motivated to do whatever it takes to get French Woods open and safe. We will continue our individual choice philosophy and combine it with the necessary safety protocols. Camp is months away, but we are working hard to make it the best summer yet.
As always, if you have any questions or would like to discuss our program, just call the office.
See you all soon,
Isaac

We are already getting ready for a fantastic 2021 season and cannot wait to see all of you this summer! As you will see in the show list, we have several French Woods premiers, many of which are also world amateur premiers!
Each age group is getting to explore new shows this summer--some brand new to camp, and others brand new to the age group. While we very much missed getting to see you all in classes and work with you to put together awesome shows last summer, we know that 2021 is going to be absolutely amazing and full of great shows, experiences and lifelong memories.
Our theater staff is counting down the days until we get to be creating theater with you again this summer, and hope you are all continuing to create awesome art and explore theater safely this year. We will be seeing you all before we know it!

Hi Frenchwoodites: Here we go again. 2021 is just around the corner. 21 will feature new bunks on both Boys and Girls campus, a remodeled cooking room, an expanded canteen and a renovated playhouse. It is amazing to me that improvements never end.
During the last few weeks, I have been working with Ryan to improve service in the Dining Hall. This year will feature the introduction of camper waiters to French Woods and the opening of a vegan-vegetarian service area in each dining hall. This will not change regular service or the alternate area. It will be just another feature to add to our service.
In the meantime, keep safe. We’ll definitely see you next summer. Ron & Barbara
