Dear French Woods Families,
Already, we are busy getting ready for an upcoming 2023 season and cannot wait to see all of you this summer! The show list is very exciting and we’ve already started to discuss Broadway trips. We will have more information to come.
Each age group is getting to explore new shows this summer--some brand new to camp, and others brand new to the age group.
Our staff is counting down the days until we get to be creating art with you again this summer, and hope you are all continuing to create awesome art and explore theater safely this year. We will be seeing you all before we know it!

Hi Frenchwoodites, Here we go again. 2023 is just around the corner. Beth and I just returned from a hiring trip to England and Scotland. While we were there, we stopped off to see our English contingent of campers who were with us in 2022. The British are coming. They will be back in ’23. We have made some progress in selecting the shows for the Broadway trips this coming summer. We are sure of Kimberly Akimbo. I saw it about a week ago and loved it. It is a must see and the camp is going. We’ll send out information on dates shortly. The progression being made on the refurbishing of the bunks is incredible. If things continue as they have, we should be done before camp starts next summer. Wait until you see the Cat. Again, a good deal of time and effort and we have a newly refurbished theater. It is amazing to me that improvements never end.
Anyway: See you next summer. We can’t wait. Ron & Barbara

Photos by @James.T. Murray 54 Below Celebrates French Woods was a huge success. On November 11th alum, staff and current campers performed in a wonderful, heartwarming concert. Generations of Frenchwoodites were there on-stage and in the audience. A special thank you to Michael Kushner, Ben Caplan and Jen Sandler for putting it all together and to Dan Schneider and the Florence Belsky Foundation and staff for orchestrating donations to the Hancock-French Woods Arts Alliance (HFWAA). FWF Program Director and HFWAA Exec Dir., Rose Robinson, was there to promote the Alliance and introduce our current campers who closed the evening by singing Josh Freilich's Every Summer.
Gabriella Baldacchino cast as Morgan Philip in Walt Disney Pictures 2022 musical fantasy comedy, Disenchanted, joins a cast that includes Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey, Idina Menzel, Maya Rudolph and more.
Levi Robinovitz performed with his school’s thespian troupe in their first competition of the school year and won!
Paloma Martinez Muhsin was cast in two roles in the A.C.T's production of A Christmas Carol in San Francisco. She'll be playing the part of Sally Cratchit and Precious.

Dear Parents and Guardians;
Part 1 Be assured that we at French Woods understand the effects that the pandemic, US and local politics and the world geopolitical influence had on so many of us. Children were sheltered both physically and emotionally. They saw so much of what is going on around us and we cannot assume they have not internalized these distractions into fears and other emotional changes. Anxiety, depression and other mental health issues have affected children, parents, and staff in so many different ways. Coping skills have taken a 'hit' without the ability to be out in the world practicing self-care which all starts with self-awareness and creates a better self-concept. Instead, our kids, have been indulged and coddled, out of our fear of greater damage to their psyche and well-being.
How do we get beyond that? We are looking forward to summer 2023 with a plan to get back to a newer and better normalcy; where parents can let go of their children and allow them to learn to reach for the stars again, relearn those coping skills and use them to reconnect with those around them. They need to disconnect from their devices and to connect with each other. Our goal at French Woods is to give our children the tools necessary to help them become better adults as they grow up in this new society and use their newfound coping skills to be a part of a community of caring, support, calmness, love, harmony, patience and understanding.
In this month's article, I will focus on life at home before camp begins with suggestions to help parents and other caregivers cope and assist their children in prepartation for the summer. Next month's article will go more in depth as to staffing changes and restructured trainings that will include a cognizant shift in attention toward mental health needs at camp that will aid us in getting back to that newer and better camp normalcy.
Back to parents - as good parents, all of us go to great lengths to play a big role in the lives of our children and, as a result, their lives naturally become our lives. So what happens when they will go to summer camp, leaving us all alone in a quiet house?
Here are five quick tips to help the adults at home:
1. Focus on the positive. "Focus on what is so positive about the experience children will have at camp – the opportunity to have fun while developing social skills, building character and self respect, spending time in nature, and participating in a community based on caring, fairness, citizenship, and trust." - Peg L. Smith, ACA CEO
2. Remember that separation is natural and necessary. "Remember your baby's first crawl, the first time your child stepped onto a school bus, and his or her first overnight with a friend or relative. These memories are all important developmental phases you and your child successfully navigated. Each successful separation gives your child confidence for the next challenge. Recognize and expect success." - Peg L. Smith, ACA CEO
3. You've taught them well. "Trust that the connection you have with your child doesn't break or evaporate when you are physically apart. Everything you have taught them is there. Having anxiety or sadness about seeing them off is entirely reasonable and understandable. How can you love your kids and not have some feelings like these? Yet, one of the most valuable lessons we as adults can model for our children is that even in the face of our feelings, no matter how strong, we do what is best." - Bob Ditter, family therapist
4. This is vital preparation. "As our children prepare to eventually leave home permanently, the camp experience will instill independence through summers of fun while helping them acquire skills and assets that will serve them throughout their lives." - Peg L. Smith, ACA CEO
Share what you are feeling. "Talk with a friend or spouse. What are you feeling? What was the reason for sending your child to camp in the first place? Having an outside perspective can help us look more evenly at our own."
In closing, as of Thanksgiving, there will be 197 days left until session 1, summer of 2023 and 219 days for the start of session 2.
